Day Three: Getting Out of Dodge (Plus Very Public Toilets)
"'You are a foreigner of some sort,' said Gertrude.
'Of some sort – yes; I suppose so. But who can say of what sort? I don't think we have ever had occasion to settle the question. You know there are people like that. About their country, their religion, their profession, they can't tell.'"
- Henry James,
The Europeans

Sunday morning and Alex came in all geared up for business battle, and the three of us lay around chatting happily (me in a towel), and then we hit the road – Alex to his meetings, us for a last amble around Die Altstadt before our 4pm flight.

This is the Justizpalast, which I don't expect needs any translation We idled by this fountain for a bit Then circled back toward Marienplatz via this park along Maximiliansplatz Unfortunately, I badly needed the toilet by this point – don't ask – so we angled in on the Residenz, both as tourist destination and to abuse their facilities After an endless, steep, winding staircase climb, I finally found the toilet – with the whole window/wall behind it thrown open to the courtyard! Hilarious. I was in no position to complain, nor to go look for another. When I latterly rejoined Anna, and we departed via the courtyard, I asked her: 'Want to know where the toilet is? There!' and I pointed right at it. As we'd prepared for this trip, we figured we were probably going to get frigging volcanoed again. Then we figured we'd get out, but not be able to get back. In the event, we were fine both ways. But – as we had no idea at the time (thank God) – Munich airport had been totally shut on the Saturday (the day between our flight in and our flight out). Fuchs is the author of the novels The Manuscript and Pandora's Sisters, both published worldwide by Macmillan in hardback, paperback and all e-book formats (and in translation); the D-Boys series of high-tech, high-concept, spec-ops military adventure novels – D-Boys, Counter-Assault, and Close Quarters Battle (coming in 2016); and is co-author, with Glynn James, of the bestselling Arisen series of special-operations military ZA novels. The second nicest thing anyone has ever said about his work was: "Fuchs seems to operate on the narrative principle of 'when in doubt put in a firefight'." (Kirkus Reviews, more here.)

Fuchs was born in New York; schooled in Virginia (UVa); and later emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he lived through the dot-com boom. Subsequently he decamped for an extended period of tramping before finally rocking up in London, where he now makes his home. He does a lot of travel blogging, most recently of some very long walks around the British Isles. He's been writing and developing for the web since 1994 and shows no particularly hopeful signs of stopping.
