Dispatch from the Razor's Edge, the Blog of Michael Stephen Fuchs
A Cruelty-Free Thanksgiving

I'm a big fan of – which is a bold claim given that I've been thusfar too intimidated to try any of the recipes; though Anna is pledging to now – the "What the Hell Does a Vegan Eat, Anyway?" blog. These guys are basically spectacular cooks, who decided to answer that constant dumb question in pictures. (Pictures that make it clear they're eating a lot better than we are – in every conceivable sense.)

Here's some of their Thanksgiving wonderfulness.

And nobody has to get killed! (Or tortured.)

Oh, here's their menu for Thanksgiving 2011:

  • Roasted Kabocha Squash
  • Wild Rice Stuffing
  • Apple Wood and Sage-Smoked Tofu Blocks stuffed with Sauteed Collard Greens
  • Oyster Mushrooms
  • Mushroom Gravy
  • Braised Carrots
  • Roasted Brussels Sprouts
  • Roasted Potatoes
  • Knotted Dinner Rolls
  • Bourbon-Orange Cranberry Compote
  • Pumpkin Mousse with Whipped Cream
  • Chocolate & Coconut Milk Ganache Tart with Sea Salt

Turkeys are naturally lively, intelligent, social, affectionate, and curious birds. This Thanksgiving, fifty million of them – who, like other birds, enjoy no protections and are not included in the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act – will be killed at age five months (their whole lives spent packed into dark airless sheds surrounded by their own waste) by a spinning blade that slits their throats while they hang by their feet, still totally conscious. (I'll spare you the video evidence of this, but here it is if you want it.) This week you face the choice of whether to cause one of those short terrible lives and horror-movie deaths; or whether to spare one.

Oh, and by no means least, eating a plant-based diet will help keep you from getting cancer or heart disease (our two biggest killers); and – especially if you also cut out refined white carbs and sugar – will make you thin. So there's that.

close photo of Michael Stephen Fuchs

Fuchs is the author of the novels The Manuscript and Pandora's Sisters, both published worldwide by Macmillan in hardback, paperback and all e-book formats (and in translation); the D-Boys series of high-tech, high-concept, spec-ops military adventure novels – D-Boys, Counter-Assault, and Close Quarters Battle (coming in 2016); and is co-author, with Glynn James, of the bestselling Arisen series of special-operations military ZA novels. The second nicest thing anyone has ever said about his work was: "Fuchs seems to operate on the narrative principle of 'when in doubt put in a firefight'." (Kirkus Reviews, more here.)

Fuchs was born in New York; schooled in Virginia (UVa); and later emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he lived through the dot-com boom. Subsequently he decamped for an extended period of tramping before finally rocking up in London, where he now makes his home. He does a lot of travel blogging, most recently of some very  long  walks around the British Isles. He's been writing and developing for the web since 1994 and shows no particularly hopeful signs of stopping.
