(And Hope That Freedom Brings Peace)
"We do not rejoice in victories. We rejoice when a new kind of cotton is grown and when strawberries bloom in Israel."
- Golda Meir (Israeli Founder and Prime Minister, 1898-1978)

You won't have missed my ardent boosterism of the militaries of the U.S. and UK. It is only because these amazing men and women choose to serve – and do so with such skill and honor and sacrifice – that the rest of us can kick around enjoying unprecedented freedom, security, and prosperity.

However, there is another nation's military which is on the very front-lines of the struggle against terrorism, extremism, and indiscriminate violence. They are also the valiant defenders of history's most comprehensively kicked-around, assailed, and dispossessed folks: the Jewish people. And they can never afford to lose a war: Israel has faced the very real threat of annihilation since the first day of its founding.

Here's three minutes that will definitely warm your heart – and hopefully increase your appreciation for what these wonderful young people of Israel struggle with and contribute every day.

Not at all incidentally, with freedom on the March in the Arab Middle East, there has never been more hope for peace (finally) in this part of the world. Let's all pray for it, and pray that the peoples there have the strength and wisdom to embrace it.

close photo of Michael Stephen Fuchs

Fuchs is the author of the novels The Manuscript and Pandora's Sisters, both published worldwide by Macmillan in hardback, paperback and all e-book formats (and in translation); the D-Boys series of high-tech, high-concept, spec-ops military adventure novels – D-Boys, Counter-Assault, and Close Quarters Battle (coming in 2016); and is co-author, with Glynn James, of the bestselling Arisen series of special-operations military ZA novels. The second nicest thing anyone has ever said about his work was: "Fuchs seems to operate on the narrative principle of 'when in doubt put in a firefight'." (Kirkus Reviews, more here.)

Fuchs was born in New York; schooled in Virginia (UVa); and later emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he lived through the dot-com boom. Subsequently he decamped for an extended period of tramping before finally rocking up in London, where he now makes his home. He does a lot of travel blogging, most recently of some very  long  walks around the British Isles. He's been writing and developing for the web since 1994 and shows no particularly hopeful signs of stopping.
