Spiritual Imbalance In Our Lives
I think Hari has really nailed it in his new book: our society is having a crisis of depression and anxiety not because of chemical imbalances in our brains, but because of spiritual imbalances in our lives. Specifically, in modern society we have all become disconnected - from meaning and purpose, from useful work and meaningful values, but mainly, overwhelmingly, from one another. (See excerpt in prior dispatch.) If you're not going to read the book, you can get the big points below in an hour or even, really, in the first 23 minutes.
I would have been at this event, incidentally, but all Hari's London appearances are sold out…
On reflection, actually, this interview in conversation with the wonderful Andrew Sullivan whom I've been of fan of for the better part of two decades might be better. Probably watch this one. :) Worth it for the opening anecdote about Sullivan, his terrific book Virtually Normal, Obama, and the triumph of gay marriage, alone.
