Years (about 20 of them) and thousands of lives later, I am so, so, so happy and excited to announce the launch of the audiobook edition of my second – and second least-loved (by everyone but me) – book, Don't Shoot Me in the Ass, and Other Stories, performed by the stratospherically talented narrators Tanner Smith and Dawn Hartwell.

So this is a book I wrote a very long time ago, and which is still really near and dear to my heart. (I still sometimes think the second story is the best thing I ever wrote, and boggle at how it dropped from my pen.) As many of you know, asskicking female protagonists are an abiding feature of my work, and this one is no different. So, for the audio edition, I really thought it needed both a male and female narrator to do it justice – and both performers I engaged absolutely knocked my socks off, and knocked it out of the park.

Thrillingly, not only did Dawn brilliantly solo-perform the two pieces with female protags/POVs, but for the story that was most half-and-half, she recorded the dialogue of the female lead, and Tanner edited those bits into the rest, resulting in what I personally found to be PFM. (Pure magic.) I not only laughed aloud constantly, but actually teared up at the end. (As always, it's mortifying laughing, never mind crying, at your own material – but, also as always, voice performers can give an entirely new life and dimension to that material. I reckon it's a bit like a playwright or screenwriter seeing what an actor does with his lines.)

Tanner crushed all his solo stories, as well; and, ultimately, overall, I think the audiobook they created is just amazing.

So, right now, at launch, what this release really needs is some reviews to bolster it. So I'm very happy to give it to you for free in hopes of getting an honest review out of you. (And by that, I mean: if you honestly adore it and want to give it a rave 5-star review, thanks very much indeed! If you don't love it, you're off the hook for leaving a review. And also thank you very much. :) Just contact me however – indicating, critically, whether you use the US or UK Audible store – and I'll send you a free download code. (While supplies last.)

And if you're not already an Audible subscriber, from now until the end of the year you can get 60% off your first four months! That's a mere $5.95 a month, and a great time to check out the current mania for consuming stories the way we did for the 4.5 millennia before printing.

Fuchs is the author of the novels The Manuscript and Pandora's Sisters, both published worldwide by Macmillan in hardback, paperback and all e-book formats (and in translation); the D-Boys series of high-tech, high-concept, spec-ops military adventure novels – D-Boys, Counter-Assault, and Close Quarters Battle (coming in 2016); and is co-author, with Glynn James, of the bestselling Arisen series of special-operations military ZA novels. The second nicest thing anyone has ever said about his work was: "Fuchs seems to operate on the narrative principle of 'when in doubt put in a firefight'." (Kirkus Reviews, more here.)

Fuchs was born in New York; schooled in Virginia (UVa); and later emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he lived through the dot-com boom. Subsequently he decamped for an extended period of tramping before finally rocking up in London, where he now makes his home. He does a lot of travel blogging, most recently of some very  long  walks around the British Isles. He's been writing and developing for the web since 1994 and shows no particularly hopeful signs of stopping.
