"Razor's Edge" is *obviously* a reference to your deeply-seated
homoerotic bald-head attraction.  :)

Sounds like Big Plans are being made for travel to the Dark
Continent. Get yer shots, buddy, lest ye get stuck with a bug
that makes hep C look like a cold (and there's STILL no vaccine
for Ebola).

If you ever get a wild hair up yer ass come on down to Tucson.

Hey Michael,

I hope I am mistaken in inferring that you are planning a trip
to Africa. If that is indeed the case, PLEASE be careful. Think
twice. Africa is home to an abundance of HIV, dangerous
wildlife, deadly bacteria, disease-carrying insects, and
potentially hostile natives. Of course, it is also reportedly
one of the most beautiful collections of natural landscapes on
earth. But take care of yourself! You can always watch National
Geographic to catch a safe glimpse of the beauty there.

But then, the odds of your giving up a trip you've already
planned are about as likely as my giving up the consumption of
cheese and ice cream.

Closing up shop is never easy, never without regrets.  It's the
inertia of the years.  And the Bay Area is pretty easy on the
eyes. I applaud and am envious of your carpe diem especially as
my life seems more and more on track.  I will be following your
dispatches closely.

Residency application season is this fall and Emergency
Medicine is my game.  The beauty of this specialty is its
flexibility. Once emergency trained, I can go pretty much
anywhere-be it an Indian reservation to a cruise ship doctor.
I too have plans to travel the world, they'll just have to wait
a few more years.

It's been hard to keep in touch over the past couple of years,
but wherever you go and wherever you end up, just keep leaving
that trail of words/pictures/thoughts and I'll do my best to
catch up.

p.s.  Free medical advice/common sense:  Hope you're packing
your antimalarials and up to date on your vaccines. Especially
with your history of ulcerative colitis, you don't want any
uninvited guests stressing the denizens of your gut.   Also
just saw my first case of African Sleeping Sickness-recent
immigrant from Central Africa.  That and the 2 kinds of malaria
he had made him 'Sweet Jesus, deliver me from this life'
miserable.  Also dengue aka 'breakbone fever' is endemic as
well as acute hemorrhagic fever, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis,
and pockets of a little ol' thing they used to call the black
death, responsible for the final collapse of the Roman empire
under Justinian, decimating 33% of Europe in a 5 yr period,
bringing about 300+ years of misery…ah good ol' plague!
Pack some doxycycline (good for malaria too).  Lots of DEET and
long sleeves when possible, methinks.
