Military Motivators
Plus Not Spiraling Away Into A Right-Wing Black Hole

I know I've been a little hot and heavy with the political, and also the pro-military, stuff. I've had one or two unsubscriptions from dispatch lately, presumably as a result. I confess these give me pause (and, okay, sting a little, too) – though of course A) I have no expectation that people will always read my stuff, and B) if I weren't annoying anyone, I probably wouldn't be saying anything very interesting, and C) I definitely recognise that I have some positions that many will regard as extreme.

As a matter of fact, I'm a little concerned that I not spiral away into an echo-chamber of self-reinforcing right-wing opinion – so I'm trying to read some lefty blogs, to keep a bit of balance. (Years ago, a very smart conservative guy told me I should read the New York Times to balance my reading of the Washington Post. That was way back when the Times was conservative, and the Post was liberal! And so was I!) I've started with the The Daily Kos. If anyone has any other suggestions, they are gratefully received in the comments section.

Meantime, I'm at least going to try to lighten up for awhile. Here's some right-wing pro-military stuff – but very funny, tongue-in-cheek right-wing pro-military stuff! And after this – partly in response to the semi-anonymous Jessica's request for stuff that makes you "laugh so much you end up crying and can't breathe" – I'll just post some fun stuff. Promise.

"Know Any Insurgents?" – This video, while looking a little stagey, does rather illustrate how good things have gotten how quickly in Iraq. Also, darned funny.

Military Motivators – These are some of my very favourites from Military Motivators. Update: Sadly, the site has disappeared. Even more sadly, and stupidly, I'd linked directly to the images rather than saving them. Subsequently, I've recovered which ones I could from around the web. If you know where there are more, please write me to let me know.

close photo of Michael Stephen Fuchs

Fuchs is the author of the novels The Manuscript and Pandora's Sisters, both published worldwide by Macmillan in hardback, paperback and all e-book formats (and in translation); the D-Boys series of high-tech, high-concept, spec-ops military adventure novels – D-Boys, Counter-Assault, and Close Quarters Battle (coming in 2016); and is co-author, with Glynn James, of the bestselling Arisen series of special-operations military ZA novels. The second nicest thing anyone has ever said about his work was: "Fuchs seems to operate on the narrative principle of 'when in doubt put in a firefight'." (Kirkus Reviews, more here.)

Fuchs was born in New York; schooled in Virginia (UVa); and later emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he lived through the dot-com boom. Subsequently he decamped for an extended period of tramping before finally rocking up in London, where he now makes his home. He does a lot of travel blogging, most recently of some very  long  walks around the British Isles. He's been writing and developing for the web since 1994 and shows no particularly hopeful signs of stopping.
