Few of you will recall (few indeed probably even noticed at the time) that Suck.com was the web's first daily publication – and, up until its tragic and era-ending demise in 2001, the web's longest-running. You may snigger at the name; but know that its founders, Carl and Joey, actually wanted to name it something worse – only the InterNIC wouldn't give them the domain name. The rest is Net.history.
Anyway, for years and years, Wednesdays on Suck was Filler – a comic odyssey hosted by our heroine Polly Esther (AKA Heather Havrilesky), and including the adventures of a giant evil Canadian crack-smoking rabbit, a commitment-phobe called Mr Flinchy, a huge array of dissolute urban hipsters, men and women to avoid, and many more unforgettable characters. Themes include dating, the tragically hip, Internet ennui, Generation X, mild mental illness, holiday hellishness, literary pretensions, alcohol and other psychic painkillers, annoyingly consequential life choices, the working life of new media pissboys, bitterness, and hyper-cynicism. Heck, let's face it, she pretty much defined the age. Here are a few to cherish.
