Some Sanity
Much Needed, Provided to the UN
"Being in a minority, even a minority of one, did not make you mad. There was truth, and there was untruth, and if you clung to the truth even against the whole world, you were not mad. 'Sanity is not statistical.'"
- George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four

The world – or, rather, the U.N. and the "international community" – are now so far through the looking glass that the leader of the Jewish State had last month to stand up in front of the U.N. and wave the Nazi minutes planning the extermination of the Jews, and the plans for the Auschwitz-Berkenau camp, to demonstrate that one third of the Jewish race was actually exterminated.

He had to do this after the head of the theocratic junta that recently stole the Iranian election, and who has funded and promoted attrocities around the world, and who denies the last Holocaust while gleefully acquiring the nightmare weapons to perpetrate the next one, was given a platform and a hearing by the U.N.

"Have you no shame? Have you no decency? A mere six decades after the holocaust, you give legitimacy to a man who denies the murder of six million Jews, while promising to wipe out the State of Israel, the state of the Jews? What a disgrace. What a mockery of the charter of the United Nations."

"Will the U.N. take action against the dictators who stole an election in broad daylight – and then gunned down Iranian protestors, who died on the sidewalks on the street, choking in their own blood? Will the international community thwart the world's most pernicious sponsor and practitioner of terrorism? Above all, will the international community stop the terrorist regime of Iran from developing atomic weapons? The people of Iran are courageously standing up to this regime. Will the United Nations stand by their side?"

"Recent signs are not encouraging. Rather than condemning the terrorists and their Iranian patrons, some here in the United Nations have condemned their victims. Thousands of rockets, mortars, fired by Hamas, hurling down from the sky on schools, on homes, shopping centers, bus stops. Year after year as these missiles were deliberately fired on our civilians, not a single – not one – U.N resolution was passed condemning those criminal attacks. Who did the U.N. Human Rights Council decide to condemn? Israel."

"In 1947, this body voted to establish two states for two peoples: a Jewish state and an Arab state. The Jews accepted this resolution. The Arabs rejected it – and invaded the embryonic Jewish state with the hopes of annihilating it. We ask the Palestinians to finally do what they refused to do for sixty-two years: say yes to a Jewish state."

"But the Palestinians also live there. And they want a home of their own. We want to live side by side with them, two free peoples, living in peace, living in prosperity, living in dignity…. But we don't want another Gaza, another south Lebanon, another Iranian-backed terror base abutting Jerusalem… We want peace. And I believe with good will, and hard work, such a peace can be achieved. But it requires, from all of us, to roll back the forces of terror led by Iran, that seek to destroy peace, that seek to eliminate Israel, that seek to overturn the international order. The question facing the international community is whether it is prepared to confront those forces – or to accomodate them."

Fuchs is the author of the novels The Manuscript and Pandora's Sisters, both published worldwide by Macmillan in hardback, paperback and all e-book formats (and in translation); the D-Boys series of high-tech, high-concept, spec-ops military adventure novels – D-Boys, Counter-Assault, and Close Quarters Battle (coming in 2016); and is co-author, with Glynn James, of the bestselling Arisen series of special-operations military ZA novels. The second nicest thing anyone has ever said about his work was: "Fuchs seems to operate on the narrative principle of 'when in doubt put in a firefight'." (Kirkus Reviews, more here.)

Fuchs was born in New York; schooled in Virginia (UVa); and later emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he lived through the dot-com boom. Subsequently he decamped for an extended period of tramping before finally rocking up in London, where he now makes his home. He does a lot of travel blogging, most recently of some very  long  walks around the British Isles. He's been writing and developing for the web since 1994 and shows no particularly hopeful signs of stopping.
