ARISEN, Book Three

Glynn and I are enormously tickled to announce publication of the hotly anticipated next installment in our bestselling ARISEN series of spec-ops zombie-apocalypse dark action thrillers. We've been tickled on an ongoing basis by the sales – all three books climbed onto the genre bestseller charts and basically floated there for months as if nailed to the mast – and especially by the reader reaction, which has just been amazing. To all the folks who have bought and read the books, who have written so many gracious reviews on Amazon, and who have contacted us directly with such fantastic support and feedback, we say THANKS.

Free ARISEN, Book One
And to say thanks more concretely, we're putting Book One on sale for $0.99 (two-thirds off), for a limited time (possibly a very limited time). But if you want to check out the series, now's a great time to dive in:

$0.99 ARISEN Book One

Readers are calling the ARISEN series "a non stop thrill ride" … "unputdownable" … "the most original and well-written zombie novels I have ever read" … "riveting as hell – I cannot recommend this series enough" … "the action starts hot and heavy and does NOT let up" … "astonishingly well-researched and highly plausible" … "non-stop speed rush! All action, all the time – got my heart racing" … "A Must Read, this book was a hell of a ride" … and "may be the best in its genre."

Alpha team, the world's last and best surviving Tier-1 operators, are adrift on Lake Michigan – and fast drifting into what looks like a damned hostile shoreline. Deep in the National Forest nearby, a former police officer and survivalist battles to keep her family alive – and tries to decide whether the commandos of Alpha are more dangerous to her alive or dead. Meanwhile, the John F. Kennedy, the world's last floating supercarrier, is run aground off the coast of Virginia – and facing a veritable hurricane of the dead, blowing in fast. And finally, back in Fortress Britain, the terrible outbreak from the Channel Tunnel turns out not to have been so contained after all – and a death grip is beginning to close on London, and shaping up into humanity's very last stand…

Update! Both Book Three, and the newly discounted Book One, have cracked the Amazon Horror bestseller list. (It's a lot more crowded and competitive in there. Like a prison full of zombie apocalypse survivors.)
Updated update! We're now number 20 in War, which puts us on the same page as Tom Clancy, Brad Taylor – and, best by far, WWZ!
Updated update updated! We actually got as high as #10 – at which point Glynn noted: "#*&^ me. Now I'm getting nervous…"

If you're still reading this by any chance… I may do a new dispatch soon on the "craft and business of fiction," because it's getting pretty damned interesting. But for now allow me to say that I have personally worked harder on this book than on anything I've ever done before. (At any rate, it was definitely the most intense and concentrated effort. COUNTER-ASSAULT was certainly more work overall – but I had to write 3.5 times as many words for that book, plus carry a lot more characters and story. I also did it over the course of a year and a bit – versus less than two months for this one!)

In recent years, I've really shifted the focus of my efforts and development from "writing" to "storytelling". I would never say a thing against the former – except perhaps that it turns out most people really don't give a damn about good writing, while they do love awesome stories. And it turns out there's absolutely nothing easy about doing effective and powerful storytelling – it profoundly tests and taxes my every cognitive sinew.

I think that, slowly and bit by bit, I'm getting closer to getting it right. And I think this book represents the next step forward on the path. While it was hellishly difficult to write – we definitely tried some harder things, and I hope pulled them off – it was also kind of a blast. Hope you enjoy reading it half as much.

Oh, almost forgot – pretty much the only criticism we got in the reader reviews was that the books are too damned short! (A nice criticism to get.) But we've taken that to heart: the new book is 50% greater in length. So enjoy the Zulu Alpha for longer! It won't be ending anytime soon, muahahahahaha…

Fuchs is the author of the novels The Manuscript and Pandora's Sisters, both published worldwide by Macmillan in hardback, paperback and all e-book formats (and in translation); the D-Boys series of high-tech, high-concept, spec-ops military adventure novels – D-Boys, Counter-Assault, and Close Quarters Battle (coming in 2016); and is co-author, with Glynn James, of the bestselling Arisen series of special-operations military ZA novels. The second nicest thing anyone has ever said about his work was: "Fuchs seems to operate on the narrative principle of 'when in doubt put in a firefight'." (Kirkus Reviews, more here.)

Fuchs was born in New York; schooled in Virginia (UVa); and later emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he lived through the dot-com boom. Subsequently he decamped for an extended period of tramping before finally rocking up in London, where he now makes his home. He does a lot of travel blogging, most recently of some very  long  walks around the British Isles. He's been writing and developing for the web since 1994 and shows no particularly hopeful signs of stopping.
