STARSET

So my life is so awesome right this second I'm getting to see my two favourite musical acts perform in London on consecutive nights. (With my favourite concert-going companion, who equally loves both bands.)

Last night was Starset. I couldn't say enough great things about this outfit: they're ridiculously smart and creative, wonderfully theatrical live, and frequently hard and heavy enough to support both my running and writing – in fact, they, like tomorrow's band (Hollywood Undead), have been indispensable in the creation of more than a few of my books. (They actually have their own companion novel.) I love them. You should love them, too.

I'm putting these video snippets here mostly so I can find and watch them forever, remembering an amazing night (I think I cried, whilst smiling the width of my face, three times – their music is that beautiful and powerful… and means that much to me.)

Super-theatrical stage entrance:

Just about my favourite (and most spiritually/professionally relied upon) Starset song right now – “Trials” – unfortunately not the greatest audio, with all of us punters outsinging the singer…

You've got to like any band that has not only a costume change at the interval – but also a highly amusing video segment, with countdown timer, to keep you amused:

Much of the genius of Starset is in their string section. I love them. This is also Ness's unofficial theme song (“Carnivore”); not that it's not also super-inspiring to me…

Close second fave from the new album – “Other Worlds Than These”:

One of their first bigger hits, “My Demons”:

Fuchs is the author of the novels The Manuscript and Pandora's Sisters, both published worldwide by Macmillan in hardback, paperback and all e-book formats (and in translation); the D-Boys series of high-tech, high-concept, spec-ops military adventure novels – D-Boys, Counter-Assault, and Close Quarters Battle (coming in 2016); and is co-author, with Glynn James, of the bestselling Arisen series of special-operations military ZA novels. The second nicest thing anyone has ever said about his work was: "Fuchs seems to operate on the narrative principle of 'when in doubt put in a firefight'." (Kirkus Reviews, more here.)

Fuchs was born in New York; schooled in Virginia (UVa); and later emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he lived through the dot-com boom. Subsequently he decamped for an extended period of tramping before finally rocking up in London, where he now makes his home. He does a lot of travel blogging, most recently of some very  long  walks around the British Isles. He's been writing and developing for the web since 1994 and shows no particularly hopeful signs of stopping.
