Somehow Pulling It Off Again

A Belated Twittorial History of ARISEN : Raiders

So as some of you will know, I laboured for quite a while under the cloud of knowing nothing I ever did would be as good as the climax & conclusion of the main series. (I knew this because completing it very nearly literally killed me, and I definitely wasn't doing that again.) The question was, What do you do after your magnum opus? Well, if you want to keep being a working artist, you have to do something. And so I did this – the ARISEN : Raiders prequel spinoff series.

I had a pretty clear vision for what I wanted to achieve with this story. And I executed it. And it was pretty damned hard. But the incredibly gratifying thing, which I never saw coming, was that many readers told me they like it better than the main series. (Just, freaking, wow.) Now, a year later, I'm kind of curious how I pulled that off, so I'm going back to have a look at what the process was like. You can, too, below, if by some freakish chance you're actually interested in that.

Two quick updates! ① Having copied and pasted about a thousand lines of embed code, I've decided this is just going to be for Raiders v5. (I will possibly/probably will do the other four volumes later. Updated update: did so, here and here) ② I really, really need to reassure everyone: I am SO MUCH better now! Seriously, I hardly recognise the struggle and despair of the Raiders v5 Michael portrayed below. I've really honestly fixed everything, and am in this completely joyful place now, including, most remarkably, with work. Writing Operators v1 is, by miles, the best, most perfect, and most peaceful writing experience I've ever had. So many miracles.

Fuchs is the author of the novels The Manuscript and Pandora's Sisters, both published worldwide by Macmillan in hardback, paperback and all e-book formats (and in translation); the D-Boys series of high-tech, high-concept, spec-ops military adventure novels – D-Boys, Counter-Assault, and Close Quarters Battle (coming in 2016); and is co-author, with Glynn James, of the bestselling Arisen series of special-operations military ZA novels. The second nicest thing anyone has ever said about his work was: "Fuchs seems to operate on the narrative principle of 'when in doubt put in a firefight'." (Kirkus Reviews, more here.)

Fuchs was born in New York; schooled in Virginia (UVa); and later emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he lived through the dot-com boom. Subsequently he decamped for an extended period of tramping before finally rocking up in London, where he now makes his home. He does a lot of travel blogging, most recently of some very  long  walks around the British Isles. He's been writing and developing for the web since 1994 and shows no particularly hopeful signs of stopping.
