Somehow Pulling It Off Again
A Belated Twittorial History of ARISEN : Raiders
So as some of you will know, I laboured for quite a while under the cloud of knowing nothing I ever did would be as good as the climax & conclusion of the main series. (I knew this because completing it very nearly literally killed me, and I definitely wasn't doing that again.) The question was, What do you do after your magnum opus? Well, if you want to keep being a working artist, you have to do something. And so I did this the ARISEN : Raiders prequel spinoff series.
I had a pretty clear vision for what I wanted to achieve with this story. And I executed it. And it was pretty damned hard. But the incredibly gratifying thing, which I never saw coming, was that many readers told me they like it better than the main series. (Just, freaking, wow.) Now, a year later, I'm kind of curious how I pulled that off, so I'm going back to have a look at what the process was like. You can, too, below, if by some freakish chance you're actually interested in that.

And was yesterday’s great writing day any help whatsoever with today’s? Hmm. Let me see. Fuck no.

“Or, you know, you hit the jackpot… everybody turns to you and says, ‘Okay, you gotta do it again.’ Even when you get to the top, there’s this realization: ‘Okay, the view is great, but tomorrow I gotta get up and start climbing the mountain again.’” – ibid

Got my ass absolutely handed to me by the book yesterday. Got up today anyway. (Slightly surprised myself, but did it.)
— Michael Stephen Fuchs (@michaelstephenf) January 28, 2022
And the theme song for today, utterly unerringly picked out by the MP3 player on my run:
— Michael Stephen Fuchs (@michaelstephenf) January 28, 2022
“Hey, Hell is what you make
Rise against your fate
Nothing's gonna keep you down
Even if it's killing you
Because you know the truth”https://t.co/eRt1HSERRG
And then, at run’s end, in the gloaming:
— Michael Stephen Fuchs (@michaelstephenf) January 28, 2022
“Now is the time
To open your eyes
You need it, you want it,
You did it, you got it
So act like you own it this time”https://t.co/zoWXMa2heY
And I realised – on the Embankment, staring into the glorious shreds of last purple light, sparkling ochre and flaxen on the surface of the river, a single perfect contrail mirroring the shape of the bridge below, seagulls wheeling in front – this is exactly as good as it gets.

“If the rose at noon has lost the beauty it had at dawn, the beauty it had then was real. Nothing in the world is permanent, and we're foolish when we ask anything to last, but surely we're still more foolish not to take delight in it while we have it.” – W. Somerset Maugham

Fucking @threedaysgrace, man. So crunchy. And so on point.
Man, was that hard dragging my head back into the damned book after two days (of marketing stuff on the BLACK SQUADRON audiobook release). But, as the t-shirt – on the dude in SEAL TEAM – accurately has it: “No one cares. Work harder.” pic.twitter.com/ZPy2QHNdb7

Well, I think I'm prepared to call that victory in the smashmouth battle to get this book back on track. (After a severe depressive episode and emotional near-collapse… followed by covid… and eight days, and counting, of solitary… Good times.🤠) pic.twitter.com/abF6VkW6s1

(For those of you scoring at home – “or even if you’re not getting any” – as of today I’m into the cataclysmic over-the-top set-piece battle that’s the climax & conclusion of the whole series. Going to be a lively month…)

I’ve belatedly realized writing a prequel series is like writing a closed-loop time travel story: you go back in time, change a bunch of stuff, stir it around… then have to land exactly where you were at the beginning of the original timeline.

“Story is our only boat for sailing on the river of time.” – Ursula K. Le Guin
— Michael Stephen Fuchs (@michaelstephenf) April 6, 2022
Well that only took 3 writing days – of virtually zero progress – to get the climax & conclusion of the series unf&^%ed. Really felt totally powerless to fix or even face it – and it's so hard to remember how many times I've felt that way! (Book 5 springs to mind. Ditto 11&12…)
— Michael Stephen Fuchs (@michaelstephenf) April 8, 2022
Headlong and breakneck straight into the end, of the end – of the end. BOOM.💥 pic.twitter.com/tDvrizFJqn
— Michael Stephen Fuchs (@michaelstephenf) April 13, 2022
Well, that happened again, 5 years on. Lower stakes & complexity this time – though 55% as complex as climax & conclusion of main series still pretty damned complex! Once again, had to stop writing entirely for a few days & redesign whole ending. Think I've got it now.🤠 https://t.co/oXA5VSdwS0

1) Dammit. Stopped again. (Okay – operational pause!) Had to take a 6-mile walk through glorious Mediterranean sunshine – Côte d’Azur on the Thames – and make about 20 voice notes to solve this next (final?) tranche of story problems.
— Michael Stephen Fuchs (@michaelstephenf) April 21, 2022
2) Of course, I always knew story design was fractal – you can't see the finest grain problems until you're on top of them. But, anyway, think I’ve got it now! (Seriously!) This here’s the new step outline – SPOILERS!!! – merely for the end, of the end, of the end, of the end. pic.twitter.com/AUjmFmvaxH
— Michael Stephen Fuchs (@michaelstephenf) April 21, 2022
3) Anyway, it would be churlish to complain. My job is actually pretty friggin’ awesome – WAIT, DID I JUST SAY THAT!? – walking around in the glorious sunshine and breezes, thinking up crazy s&%$ and solving mental puzzles. FYMJ.

I'm tempted to say, as usual, having 95% of the book written (99% of the series!), plus having finished 29 books before this, does nothing to make this last push any less hard or scary. But, you know what? I've actually found the fun. I'm having a total blast today – whoo!😮👍🏻😃

Finding the fun *definitely* aided by that. 🙂
Yep, caught in the act.
— Michael Stephen Fuchs (@michaelstephenf) April 29, 2022
And, yes, that’s Raiders v5 – the whole series – in the can.
And, oh goodness, am I tired. It’s been a long decade, 24 ARISEN books, sprinting nonstop. Might be time for a rest… https://t.co/VGyeLO9mSQ pic.twitter.com/vVh2Z2jc5G
Well, if I failed to mention it before, Raiders v5 has an official theme song. This one powered me through SO MANY writing days; I started every single writing session with it; and I listened to it over and over and over again. @threedaysgrace, f&^% yeah.https://t.co/SOHZBFf0vj
— Michael Stephen Fuchs (@michaelstephenf) May 13, 2022
I'm now neck-deep in that part of the editing phase where everything looks like s&^% – an outstanding place from which to cut until the book is lean and mean. 🤠 Also, the full new @threedaysgrace album dropped, gloriously powering me through to publication day – and also…
— Michael Stephen Fuchs (@michaelstephenf) May 13, 2022
…providing the new official – and complete & total asskicking – theme song for the Artist's Journey: https://t.co/1D6alHRp0q

“I got fire from the stone
Blood from the ice
You don’t know about the sacrifice
To get where I am
To do what I’ve done”@threedaysgrace 🤘🏼👊🏼🖤
Well, just finished 2nd (of 4) editing passes – and it reads like an express elevator to Hell. Was definitely trying some harder things here, all coming to a head in final book. Amazing to see, 2.5 years later, I pulled it off. You're going to love this one. #ARISEN #Raiders v5
— Michael Stephen Fuchs (@michaelstephenf) May 21, 2022
Yep. It’s E-Book Conversion Day again – aka (all together now!) “Freedom From Our Former Publishing Industry Overlords Day!” Yay! 😃 Pleased to report the thrill remains giddy, even a decade later. Doesn't hurt that I love this book. 🏴☠️💥 pic.twitter.com/ujOzZpz783

For the past five years, I've struggled under the weight of the knowledge that nothing I do will ever be as good as the climax & conclusion of the main series. Now, I think… this might actually be my best work. #ARISEN #Raiders v5
— Michael Stephen Fuchs (@michaelstephenf) May 26, 2022
(Okay, realistically, probably not. But more ambitious, and more successful, in certain ways. And, definitely, seriously freaking good.)

Review: MSF is a master at military action thrillers. These characters are so well developed that you find yourself thinking about them long after you have finished reading. I have been along for the ride since the very first ARISEN book- which blew me away/1 https://t.co/O9uBk44vdg
— Bad Wendy #Witchtifa (@WendyWeidman) June 29, 2022
There are a lot of post-apoc books out there, but this one takes the reader all over the world and introduces you to the high speed/low drag of Special Ops units from different countries and what goes down when all are after the same resources. /2
— Bad Wendy #Witchtifa (@WendyWeidman) June 29, 2022
The most important thing is that the author “gets” it. He nails the feeling of family and belonging that I’ve only experienced in the military and police work. (He also has the fun toys!) He also gets the experience of feeling time acting like a rubber band and the strange /3

thoughts you have when all hell is breaking loose around you. It’s brutal, sometimes beautiful, and heartbreaking. But, most of all, you see the dark comedy that binds people together when the only person you can count on is the buddy beside you.

Do NOT miss this series!

A quick but heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who's reviewed The Last Raid.
