I'm reprinting Ilhan Omar's NYTimes piece because it's so glorious, gorgeous, and steeped in sanity. (Plus wonderfully well written.) And mainly because it offers a hopeful call to action in a dark political time....   (read more)

The first Native American and Muslim women elected to Congress. The first female governors in Maine and South Dakota. And the first openly gay governor in America....   (read more)

This isn't a thorough survey of this book and its arguments, but it's a good sample. And, critically, I suggest Pinker brings some direly needed evidence-based analysis to our conversation about politics and the human condition - overshadowing even his prior book in telling the most important human story not nearly enough people know....   (read more)

News headline you won't see today: "NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN EXTREME POVERTY FELL BY 137,000 SINCE YESTERDAY." You also didn't see it each day for the last 25 years, on each day of which it was also true. ...   (read more)

"I wholeheartedly agree with Donald Trump in his number-one issue in this campaign; and I wholeheartedly agree with Clinton in her number-one issue in this campaign: DON'T vote for Hillary Clinton... and DON'T vote for Donald Trump." - Governor Gary Johnson...   (read more)

Governors Johnson & Weld are in favour of a balanced budget, term limits, and end to military adventurism, a simplified tax system, continued immigration to strengthen our immigrant nation, and strong protections for civil liberties including marriage equality. In other words, they believe in what most Americans do: fiscal responsibility, and social tolerance....   (read more)

If you are able, save them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. ...   (read more)

In part because I'm struggling to keep my mind wrapped around the Edge books, and in part just to preserve the sense of wonder these engender (and perhaps also as antidote to the logic of human self-destruction in my latest book), I've decided to publish some excerpts. Because it's Christmas, I'm starting with a nice happy one....   (read more)

Today is Remembrance Sunday in the UK. The Queen, along with every living former Prime Minister, turn out in Whitehall to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph - the UK's memorial to all of its war dead....   (read more)

about
close photo of Michael Stephen Fuchs

Fuchs is the author of the novels The Manuscript and Pandora's Sisters, both published worldwide by Macmillan in hardback, paperback and all e-book formats (and in translation); the D-Boys series of high-tech, high-concept, spec-ops military adventure novels – D-Boys, Counter-Assault, and Close Quarters Battle (coming in 2016); and is co-author, with Glynn James, of the bestselling Arisen series of special-operations military ZA novels. The second nicest thing anyone has ever said about his work was: "Fuchs seems to operate on the narrative principle of 'when in doubt put in a firefight'." (Kirkus Reviews, more here.)

Fuchs was born in New York; schooled in Virginia (UVa); and later emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he lived through the dot-com boom. Subsequently he decamped for an extended period of tramping before finally rocking up in London, where he now makes his home. He does a lot of travel blogging, most recently of some very  long  walks around the British Isles. He's been writing and developing for the web since 1994 and shows no particularly hopeful signs of stopping.
